Chapter Eight

Standing in the living room, several feet from the front door, Joe would’ve been dishonest not to tell Eva how much he wanted to kiss her before he left. So he had.

Her ribs moved with a subtle inhale as she considered her answer, probably worrying what might happen if they did that again. Kissed. For some reason she didn’t trust him, or was it men in general? Whatever the reason, he would have to prove himself. Part of that seemed too familiar, as in Victoria Harrington redo, and his never being good enough for her. Not his kisses, no, she’d really liked those, it was just him and his humble upbringing she couldn’t get past. But Eva was a completely different person from fellow rich girl Victoria. Eva was someone doing good work for the community, and someone dealing with a mega surprise—never knowing she was a twin until recently. She was nothing like Victoria.

An idea popped into his head. “How about hands off? A hands-off kiss.” He held his up, in evidence. He’d promised to start over, slower this time, and he’d meant it, even if the more time he spent around Eva, he didn’t like that idea.

She laughed at his ridiculous suggestion.

“What? I’m serious.” He gave a deadpan stare, giving her time for his idea to sink in. “Want to try it? Could be fun.” He sensed she did want to, but needed to hear it for himself. “You might like it,” he gently taunted. “We could start a whole new thing. Hands-free kissing.”

She gave a beguiling glance. “You’re crazy, you know that?”

Not backing down, he lifted his brows, waiting for the nod. She thought a second longer.

“Okay,” she said. Not the most convincing approval, but he’d take it.

“You have to promise to keep your hands off me, too.” That got another laugh from Eva, as if it was the most absurd request, but it helped her relax, so that was good.

“This really is silly.” She looked interested, though. Definitely interested.

“But you’ll do it?” He secretly held his breath.

She didn’t break contact with his gaze, which was an unexpected reward. “Yes.”

Ah, the magic word, consent! Victory had never been so sweet. He kept his hands raised, as though following a police command, and stepped toward her, before she could change her mind. She put her hands behind her back but lifted her face to his in readiness. Her eyes studied the ceiling, as she tried not to laugh. He waited until she got that out of her system, and her gaze traveled back to him with a what-are-we-waiting-for challenge, then he let her know how serious he was.

“Our first start-over kiss,” he whispered just before he pressed his mouth to hers, immediately reeling at the softness of the lips he’d stared at a good part of the evening. She kissed him tenderly, and he savored the innocent sensation of only having their mouths touch. He angled his head to get closer, yet keeping a wide distance between their bodies.
